My name is Victor Medrano

and this is my story…

I was born 1981, on January 22th in a city at the south of Venezuela called Puerto Ordaz. My family had strong artistic roots and that allowed me to get in touch with music at a really young age.

This happened when I was 8 years old the Church where me and my family assisted. I started playing percussion instrument following the lead of my brother and I also sang in the choir following the example of my mother.

As the years went by, I did many courses and studies related to music. When I was 14 I discovered the instrument that became the center of my musical life: The trumpet. This was the real deal…  the starting point of my career as a player… that was the moment when everything started.

I played in the Bolivar State’s Symphonic Orchestra then I moved to another state… Merida where I also took part of the Symphonic Orchestra of that state. Thanks to that I was able to study with the greatest players of the country.

But then one day, I met Jazz… I felt that I was finally home. I enjoyed playing a genre where the trumpet was a key participant. Improvising over Jazz Standards was so routine practice for me. Jazz gave me the opportunity to play with many amazing musicians in so many amazing bands, like Big Band Latin-Jazz,  where I was the lead trumpet and in many other bands of the style like Quinteto Jazz Close, Cuarteto Afro Clave, Kairos Jazz.

I wanted to be able to break the limits of jazz, and soon discovered that Trumpet can fit in any style as long as you know how to do properly and with taste. Therefore, I started a journey. This helped me expand my vocabulary to several different genres… Salsa, Merengue, Guaguancó, Cha Cha Cha, Tecno merengue, Ska, and Reggae are some of the different rhythms. I started playing around many musical bands and in that way I was able to expand my understanding of the instrument.

My musical career has taken me outside my beloved Venezuela. The notes of my trumpet have sound in many different places of South America, and in the United States, where I currently live. I founded Vic Band Project as a way to honor the Instruments and the many different styles where it can fit… but most important than that, to honor God… to honor my Heavenly Father who has been my guide through all of these years and the most important person in all my life.  My first Album Heaven’s Notes is an homage to Him. I could have never imagined that I would have gotten this far… but clearly He had other plans for me… and as Philippians 4:13 clearly states I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” That is completely true… without him, I could have never gotten this far… and I believe in Him and his Fidelity… I just spread my wings and let his wind to carry wherever he wants me to go.

It is not the sound of your instrument what makes you special. What makes you special is the Melody that God puts in your heart to bless others.
